Play Patterns
Starting poorly
Bad preparation physical and/or mental
Finishing poorly
Possibly due to fatigue, not enough liquids and poor nutritional habits. It may also be due to poor concentration habits. Straining to stay focused throughout the four to five hours is tiring. Taking time out to relax and then refocusing on the task at hand may help.
Pressure points
Tournament golf Near the probable cut is one, just off to just on the leaderboard is another as is one stroke behind or in the lead. In each case there is a tendency to think of the outcome of the shots, becoming over aware of the importance of the strokes, and trying to control the stroke rather than allowing it to occur. In other words, there is a failure of trust.
Competitive round: similar points: about to go into the lead or thinking it might be the lead. Struggling to get something back.

Missed birdie/bogey
Missed shortish birdie problems next hole. There are various reasons for this, but they all tend to cause difficulties in refocusing on the task at hand. I watched for this pattern over a number of events and noticed approximately 80% of the time the hole after a relatively easy birdie putt was missed found the player either scrambling a par or worse.
